Another weekend with a mix of good and bad results for the Cannons, with Div 2 winning 1 of their 2 games and suffering a last over loss in the other, Div 3 getting a much needed win, and an undermanned Div 1 lineup losing their game.
Div 1 got us underway and put up 133 in out 20 overs, all out on the final ball. Multiple batsmen got starts but nobody could kick on, Zeeshan Ansari's 37 off 23 balls with 4 sixes the best. East Coast made light work of the chase, reaching our score 3 down in the 15th over. Shadab Ahmed took an early wicket and Zee took 2 late, but it is a game we will look to quickly move on from. Div 2 had a double header this weekend, with the first outing against Avengers on Saturday. Skipper Dhruv Mohta led from the front with 63 from 53 balls, guiding us to a total of 4/144 off 20. Ahsan Hafeez played a great supporting knock of 32 not out, and Jaideep produced some fireworks at the end with an 11 ball 27. We were in control as we reduced them to 5/46, but from here the momentum shifted to where they needed 24 off 21 without further loss. Our death bowlers did a great job though, breaking the partnership and ensuring we won by 5 runs, Jaideep capped a fine all round effort with 2/25 off 4 and Kevin Tuvar was also good with 2/21 off 4. Sunday morning saw a rare toss win for Dhruv and we again batted first against East Coast. We didn't make the most of this, slipping to 4/44 before the Aussie duo of Andrew Irving (57 off 49) and Steve Smith (28 not out) put on 64. We weren't able to get our usual boost from the lower order today, and a likely 140+ ended up being 7/127 off 20. Our bowlers were again great in an effort to defend this total, Jaideep taking another 2 wickets and Tushar Sehgal bowling a great spell in the back half to take 3. Our catching let us down though, multiple drops giving them the chance to pass our score with 2 balls left. One to learn from, but we're still in first place and this will just be a blip on the radar. Scorecard
Our Div 3 team were also against East Coast and in need of a win, and half a team backing up after Div 2 due to numerous late withdrawals due to illness. Stand-in skipper Steve won the toss and again we were batting first. After 3 overs we were 3/7 and in deep trouble. Nisarg Patel entered and hit a counter attacking 32, in a 69 run partnership with Andrew, who then added a further 36 with Matt Gove and 60 with Richard Upton, as we ended up at 6/172 off 20. Andrew fell on the last ball of the innings for 113 off 60 balls with 6 fours and 10 sixes, an new Cannons high. With the ball, we got on top early, reducing them to 7/76, with 3 wickets to Revant Sharan and 2 to newcomer Jeben Roach. The game secured, we used 8 bowlers, including Grant Whitcombe getting the first bowl of his 62 game career with the Cannons! It was pretty good too, just ask him! Scorecard
