Weekend Recap July 23-24

Weekend Recap July 23-24

The Cannons only won one of our three matches against Halifax Titans this weekend, with our Div 3 team flying the flag with a great comeback win.

They were first in action, and batted first after losing the toss. Our entire top 6 reached double figures but none could surpass Hassan Hafeez's 21, and this stop-start nature of our innings only allowed us to reach 9/125 off 20. Titans reached 52 without loss in the 8th over and appeared on track for an easy win, but a great catch from Richard Upton got us the first breakthrough. This was the first of 3 wickets for Jeben Roach, a match-turning spell. Skipper Souvik Mitra returned to take 2 vital wickets in his second spell, while Gaganpreet Singh, Jawad Khan and Kanwaljeet Singh all bowled very tidy 4 over spells to ensure Titans scoring was stifled. In the end, they only managed 7/111 and we won by 14 runs, a big win given the congested nature of the standings in Div 3. Scorecard

Div 1 played later on Saturday and started well, Shadab Ahmed in his 50th game and captain Sagar Mandhan each taking an early wicket to reduce Titans to 2/14. From here it was one-way traffic, their skipper playing brilliantly to hit 100 as they put on 138 for the 3rd wicket to end up at 5/189 off 20. Once again, we had multiple batsmen get started but nobody could convert into a big score, only Zeeshan Ansari contributing with any real significance with 42 off 35 as we fell 47 runs in the chase at 7/142. Our Div 2 team lost the toss on Sunday and fielded first. Titans started well, putting on 54 for the opening wicket, but once again our spinners turned the game. Kevin Tuvar clean bowled 3 bats, and Nihar Shah took a sharp caught and bowled. With a runout mixed in, suddenly Titans were 5/73 after 11. Their lower order batted well to reach 8/146 after 20. After losing a wicket first over, Danish Khan (21 off 20), Dhruv Mohta (22 off 19) and Grant Whitcombe (25 off 25) all looked in great touch, but in what was the story of our weekend, got out before they could turn their start into a major contribution. We got bogged down through the middle while losing regular wickets, and with 6 overs left we needed 57 with 4 wickets in hand. Tushar Sehgal (28 off 10) quickly reduced the required rate back to near a run a ball, as later did Jaideep Singh (13 off 9), but in the end we lost too many wickets too quick and were all out 11 runs short of victory with 9 balls remaining. Scorecard

We conceded more extras than the opposition in all 3 games, and had no batsmen reach 50.
